Company Overview

Varcon Inc was founded in 1987 to service the growing needs of the communication and broadcast industries. Since its incorporation, the company has become the leading provider of quality communication site engineering, inspection and project management services.

As we advance into the 21st century, the importance of telecommunications to Canada’s growth and development is becoming even more apparent. Tower structures serve a vital role in this fast paced, high-tech environment. Their design, installation and maintenance require the services of qualified professional engineers. Since the company’s beginning, the Varcon team has focused its talent and ability on servicing these particular needs for both new and existing structures. As a result, we have developed an extensive knowledge base in this very specialized field. Varcon prides itself on its commitment to offer clients a high level of independent expertise based on decades of experience in the tower industry. Our skills encompass, but are not limited to, structural inspection, structural design, structural analysis, RF surveys, microwave path analysis, corrosion assessments and project management for special projects and network deployment.

Our Team

Sean Hayman, P.Eng., PhD., MScE., BScE.

Chief Operating Officer, Co-Owner

In his role, Sean has oversight of and responsibility for the day to day operations of Varcon. This includes skills development, training programs, quality control, project execution, marketing and client relations.

Sean has over 8 years’ experience in engineering with respect to telecommunication towers. He also has 15+ years’ experience with concrete materials and structures. He worked with the federal highways association in a 5+ year project completing implementation and testing of concrete structures throughout the United States. He completed his PhD. in engineering from the University of New Brunswick in 2013. He has completed many projects in the tower industry throughout his years at Varcon including but not limited to construction drawings and structural analyses on 1000s of towers, reinforcing designs, and one off projects such as rehabilitating a concrete tower. He is a registered professional engineer in numerous provinces throughout Canada.

Trevor Bolt, P.Eng., FEC

Chief Technology Officer, Co-Owner

Trevor has over 20+ years of engineering experience in the telecommunication tower industry. He has completed many challenging tower assignments during his tenure with Varcon, encompassing all facets of the tower industry including many hundreds of CSA maintenance inspections, post-construction acceptance inspections, tower design, mount designs, foundation designs, reinforcement designs, cost estimates, structural analysis, technical specifications, scope of work documents, and large multi-scope projects managed. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and the Yukon. He also sits on the CSA-S37 technical committee responsible for developing the Canadian standards governing communication towers.

Dave Lewis

Chief Marketing Officer, Co-Owner

In his role Dave is responsible for the marketing and promotion of Varcon. This also includes managing the amazing administrative staff that is the lifeblood of the company.

Dave has over 12 years experience in marketing and business development primarily in software and technology. Being new to the engineering space, Dave enjoys learning from the team and sharing his experience to push the company forward. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his kids, collecting sports cards, and cheering on the Michigan Wolverines. Go Blue!

Nick Sutherland, CPA, CA

Chief Financial Officer

In his role, Nick has oversight and responsibility for the finance function of Varcon. This includes accounting, taxation, budgeting, planning, performance management, investor relations, and strategy.

Nick has 10 year’s experience in finance and leadership roles in a variety of industries including professional service firms, telecommunications, utilities, technology, and startups. Prior to Varcon, he ran his own professional services firm. Nick is a graduate of Acadia University with a degree in Business Administration, and he received his CA designation in 2014.

Barb McAloon, CPHR

Head Of Human ResourceS

As the Head of Human Resources, Barb is responsible to manage and direct all human resources programs and projects at Varcon. This includes developing the strategic HR plan to align with the company objectives and support the growth and well-being of all employees.

Barb has over 15 years of experience as an HR practitioner in the Engineering Consulting industry, leading the provision of HR services to address a multitude of organizational challenges. Barb takes a collaborative approach to partnering with leaders and staff, leveraging HR practices that enable the business and promote a positive, engaged workforce. In her free time, Barb enjoys travelling, hiking, and spending time with family.
